Mercy
This body of work examines the tension between the ever-expanding definition of gender as it collides with what gender means to you. It draws on the emotional rawness of self-exploration and the tumultuous inner journey that must be undergone in order to both understand and express oneself. Gender is more than just a label, it is a living synthesis of everything that comprises the nuanced human being.
What Could've Been
This project was an experiment for myself to explore the themes of the teenage experience I was expecting to have as a child. Media plays a huge role in how we perceive our lives and future. So, as a kid surrounded by all of the y2k trends, I was expecting something much more like what is depicted in these images. However, times change and we don't always get the future we dream of.
Self Expression
After deciding that I wanted to elevate the concept of portraits, I realized that the most important part is the person themselves. I see portraits as a way of documenting someone's personality, and the challenge was how to expand on that thought. This model is a very close friend of mine, and I knew that the fashion photography style would lend well to the vision I had. I believe that all parts of his personality are represented here while still providing a cohesive editorial aesthetic.
